2022 ANNUAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS
As part of Chambers Initiative, the foundation continued its increased grantmaking in the democracy sphere, with a focus on national and Colorado nonprofits engaged in policy, advocacy, and grassroots organizing through a racial and gender equity lens.
Prioritizing multi-year general support grants is still the main principle of the foundation’s funding philosophy, because the work to change systems requires it. In 2022, we wrapped up several national multi-year commitments, particularly to individual state-based organizations. Although the foundation will continue to support state-based work, it will pivot to giving larger grants to pooled donor funds, national nonprofits that regrant to smaller partners, and backbone organizations instead of giving state-by-state individual grants. This strategic consideration ensures we are working in partnership with our national donor and grant partners, and leverages our grantmaking for maximum impact. One new national nonpartisan pooled donor fund supported in 2022 is the Trusted Elections Fund. TEF supports efforts to prepare for and respond to high-risk threats to U.S. elections. It works with the on-the-ground groups seeking to prevent election-related political violence, anticipate challenges to election administration, and develop infrastructure that protects our elections and reinforces the public’s confidence in their results.
In Colorado, we continue to prioritize the ecosystem of organizations working to build a more just, inclusive, multiracial, multi-faith, progressive society. Over the past couple of years, many of our Colorado general support grant partners started preparing to protect abortion in Colorado should the United States Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade. By the time the Dobbs decision was announced in June 2022, Colorado had already passed the Reproductive Health Equity Act (RHEA) that ensures abortion and contraception are protected and legal in our state. This stands in stark contrast to the national landscape for birthing people. Chambers Fund increased giving in 2022 to its local grant partners working in the reproductive justice, health, and rights sphere, including additional grants to COLOR Latina, Cobalt Foundation, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, and others working as part of the Colorado Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice Coalition.
